Sadie Laska’s doodled, DIY aesthetic crosses various media including oils on canvas, sewn banners, and monotypes. Ultimately, collage is the underlying principle of her practice. For CUTS, she employs ready-made blank colored flags; painting images on fabric, cutting them up, sewing them back together, she works in the same manner as cutting and pasting collages on paper. The process of dissecting and reassembling images with flag materials and fabrics transforms the compositions into three-dimensional works that are free flowing. The loosely painted images sewn to the works are reminiscent of clip art, emojis and simple computer graphics. Flags, airplanes, pointing figures, talking heads and cursors all collide together to suggest political tensions, environmental concerns as well as moments of intimacy, grief, or joy.
Sadie Laska (b. 1974, West Virginia) is a visual artist and musician based in New York. She received her MFA in 2014 from the Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. Laska’s work has been shown internationally, with solo exhibitions at CANADA, New York; Office Baroque, Brussels; KS Art, New York; and Galerie Ceysson & Bénetière in Paris, Saint Etienne, France; Luxembourg and Geneva and at Newport Street Gallery in London.
